Blown off this year :-(

It was a great week but I was just a wee bit disappointed this morning to find I had an hour and a half’s work to do to clear up after those who had hired/borrowed club Fevas. They were not tied down, the sails were crumpled in the bottom of the boats, the dagger boards were also in the boats and, amazingly, the rudders were still on the transoms. In addition to a lot of work, it  means that any insurance claim would be rightly rejected.

Fevas have two different mastgates; the old ones use a 6x60mm stainless dropnose pin while the new one has a 6mm stainless bolt and turn button with a retaining moulding on the top of the mastgate. I found the new Feva had had a 6.5mm (approx.) imperial, mild steel bolt hammered in and secured with an inaccessible safety ring up under the deck. The turn button was still there. We have spares for both models so please ask. Whoever owns the mild steel bolt can collect it from me. The safety ring did not survive the extraction process.

Not only did this damage the boat (albeit only slightly), it also meant that any attempt to drop the mast on the water had no chance of succeeding.

Sadly (subject to committee approval), I will be putting in a much more robust hiring process. In the meantime, please seek permission in advance to use any club dinghy from me, whom failing the Bosun, whom failing a Flag Officer or one of the club’s qualified Instructors. Please read the draft conditions of hire pinned to the notice board in the Event Office. Please ensure the club receives the appropriate hire fee.
